Many chronic diseases can be positively influenced by good nutrition and a wide range of health issues are directly connected to poor dietary choices.
In this course you will learn the basics of nutrition and how to apply this knowledge practically as a registered nutritional advisor. The course is split into two parts and is suitable for individuals looking to work as a professional nutritional advisor, individuals studying the Diploma course in Unani Tibb, and anyone keen to develop their nutritional knowledge and understanding. Our approach to this course is very flexible, and the combination of self-study resources enables you to work at your own pace with the support of a dedicated personal tutor to guide you along the way.

Course Overview:
What will you learn in the Naturopathic Nutrition Advisor Diploma?
The course is delivered through distance learning, which includes recorded lectures, reading, quizzes, and assignments. The self-study format allows you to work through the course at your own pace. The course leads to a Naturopathic Nutrition Advisor Diploma and is a compulsory course required for all Unani Tibb practitioners, as well as an ideal course for individuals looking to work as a professional nutrition advisor.
Course Content:
The course consists of 8 units:
- Introduction to naturopathic nutrition, organic foods, and soil quality.
- Carbohydrates: biochemistry, functions, dietary sources, the importance of balance, blood glucose control and more.
- Proteins: biochemistry, functions, dietary sources, the importance of balance, supporting vegans and vegetarians and more.
- Fats: biochemistry, functions, dietary sources, the importance of balance, essential fatty acids, endocrine connections and more.
- Vitamins: in detail; interactions with minerals.
- Macro and micro minerals: in detail, interactions with vitamins.
- Naturopathic nutrition in practice: nutrition at various life stages, comparison of diets, microbiome, food allergies, the stress response, hypoglycaemia, and blood glucose control.
- Working with clients, Part 1: Introduction to supplementation, working with clients, taking a case, case interpretation. Single nucleotide polymorphisms and how they affect nutrition.
Clinical Practice
To complete the Diploma course students must also attend two days of live clinical practice which are run every year by the college.
Course Accreditation
This course enables individuals to register to practice professionally as a nutritional advisor and is accredited by the Federation of Nutritional Therapy Practitioners (FNTP).
Study Support
You will be allocated your own personal tutor who will guide you through the course and answer any questions you have along the way.
Flexibility
Training in nutrition at CUTAM is extremely flexible.
You are given two years to complete Part 1: Naturopathic Nutrition Advisor Diploma with it being completed between 6-12 months on average. (For those studying the Diploma in Unani Medicine, this course must be completed before you finish Year 3).

Progression to the Diploma in Nutritional Therapy and Eastern Nutrition
This course is a stepping stone to the Diploma in Nutritional Therapy and Eastern Nutrition. This is part two of the program and is accredited by the Federation of Nutritional Therapy Practitioners (FNTP).
Diploma in Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy and Eastern Nutrition
Course Overview:
The second part of the nutrition course leads to a Diploma in Nutritional Therapy and Eastern Nutrition and is fully accredited by the Federation of Nutritional Therapy Practitioners (FNTP).
Completion of the course enables registration with the FNTP as a Nutritional Therapist and with the Society of Naturopaths as an Associate Naturopath.
This part of the course is optional for Unani graduates, however it does provide a unique advantage in clinical practice, being able to offer both Western and Eastern nutritional approaches. This course is ideal for practitioners of Unani Medicine, Acupuncture/TCM, shiatsu, reflexology or similar.
Course Content:
This unique course covers the national occupational standards for nutrition. Additionally, it covers Eastern nutrition incorporating the nutritional approaches of Ayurveda, Chinese, Tibetan, and Unani medicine. The units in part two are designed to build upon the first eight units studied in part 1.
The course consists of 7 units:
1: Pharmacology: drugs explored from a western and eastern perspective.
2: Working with clients, Part 2: the nutrition gap, supplementation, progressing the case, assessing organ function and toxic encumbrance, liver detoxification.
3: Naturopathic alternative nutrition: electrolyte balance, naturopathic nutrition, functions of the extra cellular matrix, the effects of stress on electrolyte balance, connecting everything together, magnesium, acid/alkaline balance, hydration and blood glucose control and more.
4: Naturopathic detoxification theory: unitary theory of disease, autointoxication, routes of elimination, hierarchy of organs, movement of disease, the relevance and importance of solstices and equinoxes, detoxification programmes.
5: Unani nutrition, Part 1: Unani Dietotherapy in detail, the basics of the Unani approach to health, digestive process, importance of innate heat, digestion and formation of the four humours, classification of foods, classification of micronutrients.
6: Unani nutrition, Part 2: Unani Dietotherapy continued, degrees of strength of foods, light and dense foods, good and bad chyme, humour balance via diet, food classification tables. Understanding the relationship between health, humoral balance and correct diet and nutrition, how incorrect diet and lifestyle affects humoral balance and health.
7: Eastern nutrition: Ayurvedic nutrition, faulty food combinations, the six tastes and their effect upon the body, organs and digestion, Chinese approach to nutrition, Chinese organ clock, temperature of food, the five tastes of Chinese medicine. Tibetan medicine and nutritional approaches, how diet and lifestyle affect temperament/humour/Dosha balance, importance of seasonal eating.

Clinical Practice
Those who wish to join the FNTP must attend 2 days of live clinical practice which are run by the college every year. This is in addition to the 2 days required at Nutrition Advisor course level, totalling 4 days (28 hours) of clinical practice for the Nutritional Therapist qualification.
Course Accreditation
The Diploma in Nutritional Therapy and Eastern Nutrition is accredited by the FNTP allowing successful graduates to register with the FNTP as a Nutritional Therapist. The FNTP is the largest register of Nutritional Therapists in Europe.
